Lauryn Hill Sentenced To 3 Months In Jail.
Over the weekend, Lauryn Hill paid off $900,000 in back taxes. She also announced a new label deal, and released a new song called “Neurotic Society” (which you can hear below) all in an attempt to raise enough money to pay off her debt to the government. Sadly for Hill it wasn’t enough. Over the past decade, Hill has failed to pay about a million dollars of tax debt. And yesterday, a federal judge in Newark sentenced her to three months in prison for it. To make matters worse after prison it won’t be over, she’ll then have three months in home confinement, and then another nine under parole supervision, AND she’ll also have to pay a $60,000 fine.
According to Hill, her label forced her to release “Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix)”, as she explained on Tumblr:
Here is a link to a piece that I was ‘required’ to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline. I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music… but the message is still there. In light of Wednesday’s tragic loss (of former label mate Chris Kelly), I am even more pressed to YELL this to a multitude that may not understand the cost of allowing today’s unhealthy paradigms to remain unchecked!
I guess celebrities aren’t above the law after all?
